Shivers & Tibbits top over 265 teams at Bass Champs on Sam Rayburn
By: Patty Lenderman

Bass Champs East Texas Region kicked off their 2010 season on Sam Rayburn January 23, 2010. Weights were stacked tight, with four ties in the money line. Pete Shivers & Doyle Tibbits topped the field of 266 teams to win $20,000.

It looked like a perfect day to fish. Low pressure, overcast skies, a front on the way and temperatures reaching nearly 70 degrees. There were just two factors that made it tough.
Water temperatures are still in the lower 50’s, keeping the big sows in deeper water until the water warms a little bit more, and the overcast skies kept them roaming instead of hugging to cover. Eighty eight teams managed limits, but most of them were skinny.

Pete Shivers of Kirbyville, TX and Doyle Tibbits of Broaddus, TX brought in the heaviest sack to win the guaranteed 1st place purse of $20,000. “All we did was throw a rattle trap all day,” the team explained. Their morning started out very slow, and finding a fish to bite was hard. “We stayed in pockets throwing to about 4’-6’ of water, and probably hit around 15 spots. Lots of chunking and winding.” Gradually they boated their limit and before the end of the day culled three times to their final 19.12 weight, anchored by a 6.40 lb kicker.

There was a tie for 2nd place. John Salamone & Keith White weighed in a five fish limit at 17.58 lbs, and so did Timothy & James griffin, having only four bass in their bag. Salamone & White broadened the range of their fishing area, locating fish from 6’-28’ deep. “Mostly we found our fish in main lake ditches and drops,” Salamone reported. “We were using Gambler jigs tipped with Gambler Flappy Daddy’s and also caught some with rattle traps.” By 10:00 they had a limit in the boat, but it was small. “We probably caught 25 or 30 keepers today, and broke off on two that may have made a big difference for us.” Still a good payday, the team was presented a $4,000 check. “We’d like to thank Fun-N-Sun Boating Center, Legend boats, Mercury, Motorguide, Hi Seas Line, Am Rod, V & M High Tail Shad, and Mr. Mean spinnerbaits.

Father & son Timothy & James Griffin tied for 2nd with four bass at 17.58 lbs. “We fished up in the grass, and ended up with two on a rattle trap and two on jigs. It got rough for us out there, it just didn’t work out.” Their four fish did work out for a $4,000 payday!

Jason Gates brought in the Big Bass of the tournament weighing 10.24 lbs. Fishing with Kevin Burks, the team had four fish in their livewell, and at the time of this catch only had five minutes left to fish before heading in. Jason reports catching the fish on a ¾ oz Fire Tiger rattle trap on the edge of a drain in 8’ of water near the grass. They won the $1,000 Big Bass check to add to their 4th place overall winnings of $1,800 having a total weight of 17.26 lbs tying for 4th place.
