Lewisville was tough on Bass Champs teams – Johnson & Gammons came out on top for $20,000
By: Patty Lenderman

There were many challenges for Bass Champs North Region anglers as they hit Lake Lewisville May 30. The lake had been scourged for five days prior by a sizeable college tournament. Summertime has also arrived and with it many other types of water warriors. This is not the first rodeo for these top notch anglers who found the right combinations to catch some nice bass and win some big money.

Lewisville is the home lake for the winners Terry Johnson of Coppell, TX and Bill Gammons of Lewisville. “We have fished every single Bass Champs tournament since they started. Never thought we would win on Lewisville,” Terry said. The team picked a total of six spots to hit, and ran their milk run repeatedly. “The first round we picked up three. By the time we finished hitting our spots the second time, we had a limit in the boat.” Their areas were diverse, ranging from points, banks, areas with contour changes and drop offs. “The only thing we used were Texas Rigged Berkley red shad power worms. We caught a lot of fish today, but several of them were short.” They were able to cull four times before the end of the day to their final 16.74 lb weight. They were presented with a 1st place check for $20,000. “We really enjoy fishing with Bass Champs. It is a top notch organization and we are really proud to be associated with it.”

Paul and Joe Mecca started their day with an idea of what they were going to do, but no hard plan. “We just went to a marina where we have caught fish before, fishing the boat slips and shady areas.” Using a variety of baits including white spinnerbaits, crank baits and worms, all of their fish were found in shallow water. “We tried by the dam a little but did better at the marina. It was a great day, we caught a lot of fish – including about 20 sand bass.” Joe caught their kicker weighing in at 5.40 lbs that anchored their 2nd place win with a total of 15.70 lbs.

3rd place was won by Ron Lipscomb and Lennon Mitchel with a total of 15.30 lbs. “Lennon found the fish we went after today, and we were pretty comfortable that we could at least win a check. We were one of the last boats to take off, and we realized that we forgot the net.” Explaining that Lennon caught most of the better fish, Ron said he took the role as lip man for the day. “I caught the first two, then Lennon caught the next six fish. We hit primary and secondary points as well as old road beds. I feel we could have done better, but we lost three good ones.” By 10:30 their bite shut down, but they secured a 3rd place win for $2,000.

Brett Killingsworth caught the Big Bass of the day fishing with partner Ray Peace. “We were fishing at the dam around rocks 20’ deep.” Brett was using a shaky head jig, and on his fifth cast of the day she hit. It weighed in at 8.04 lbs and earned a check for $1,000. “I just wish we had more to go with it!”

The Skeeter Bonus went to Allen Shelton and David Weber who finished in 12th place overall. Also cashing in on the Fun n Sun bonus of $500, their total winnings with the sponsor incentives was $2,500.

A total of $43,940 was collected in entry fees from 169 participating teams, and $47,940 was paid out in cash and prizes – a 108% payback! The top 23 teams received checks, the last one going to Chris Ford and Ky Martin weighing in 11.84 lbs.

There is only one tournament left to go for the North region. We’ll be wrapping it up on Tawakoni June 27th. Here is how the points standings are stacking up:
682 pts Leslie Kennedy & Trevor Romans
666 pts Scotty Wenzel & Robert Case Jr
646 pts Shonn Blassingame & Shane Elmore
640 pts Tommy Climer Jr & Tony Climer
640 pts (tie) James Lowe & Russell Lee
