Bass Champs began their 2009 season with the South Region on Lake Amistad January 17. Two hundred teams hit the lake bringing more than 1,200 pounds of bass to the scales. $50,750 in cash and prizes were on the line, and sixty eight limits were heaved to the scales trying for a piece of the pie. The top weights were over 22 pounds. The winners have been fishing the Skeeter Bass Champs Tournament Trail for the past three years. Several times they have finished in the money. This time Waylon and Karla Bullard put it all together for a 1st place win and a check for $20,000.
Amistad is an international border lake formed on the Rio Grande. Known for its deep, clear blue water and its great big bass, there was no disappointment on this day. Several individual big bass were weighed, and it was a double digit fight to the top as two hawgs over 10 pounds vied for Big Bass honors.
Bill Berry and Alex Gonzalez weighed in the first monster bass at 10.02 pounds. Incredibly, they missed Big Bass honors as Derick Kuyrkendall and Forrest Wilson weighed in theirs at 10.50 lbs. They won Big Bass honors, and 5th place overall with a total of 19.94 lbs.
The top four weights were all over 20 pounds. Tom Evans and Claude Siddle took 4th place with 20.08 lbs. Scott Saunders and Cody Johnson inched above them for a 3rd place finish, a total of 20.54 lbs. A couple of man/woman teams seized the top two spots. Rene Meza and Jose Jimenez secured 2nd place weighing 22.18 lbs. The top weight of the day was brought in by Waylon and Karla Bullard, having a total of 22.62 lbs.
The happy couple and winning team were very happy with their $20,000 first time 1st place win. “We had a great day!” The game plan was simple. Carolina rigged soft plastics in 35’-40’ of water. “By 8:30, we had a limit in the boat” Waylon recalled. “Later, Karla culled all of those and had a 6 ½ pound kicker to go with them. I caught our other 6 ½ pounder for a last cull around 1:30.” They estimate catching three limits of fish. “We hit about four different spots, and three of them paid off.” They paid off well – to the tune of almost $900 per pound of fish they weighed in. Karla and Waylon have been fishing Bass Champs together for three years now. While they have won some checks along the way, this is their biggest win yet.
The season has only just begun. Don’t miss any of the opportunities to win some big money fishing with Skeeter Bass Champs this year. Four regions, thirteen different lakes and over $1 MILLION dollars in cash and prizes will be given away this year.
