Terry & Steven Peacock wrap up the final Bass Champs North Region win on Richland Chambers
By: Patty Lenderman

June 28, 2008
The Bass Champs North Region was among the last to wrap up the 2008 tournament season. The scene was set at Richland Chambers on a hot summer day with nearly $40,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. The average weight per fish brought to the scales was nearly three pounds, making for a very interesting weigh in. The Peacocks nearly hit the 20 pound mark, winning more than $21,000. Eighteen teams divided the total winnings, with just over seven pounds between the 1st place check and 18th.

The best five fish limit caught weighed 19.64 pounds, brought in by Terry & Steven Peacock. “My nephew really stepped up to the plate” Terry said of fifteen year old Steven. “Our plan was to catch them on topwater baits first thing in the morning along shallow points. We only managed two good ones doing that.” Switching tactics, they headed out to find vegetation and used frogs and Carolina rigs. “Steven caught our two biggest fish today, and did a great job of netting the rest of the day. My regular partner couldn’t fish, and Steven really came through. I have enjoyed three top 10 finishes, and two of them have been with him.” Bass Champs paid the team $20,000 for their 1st place finish, then they received additional money from tournament sponsors. LineX came through with another $1,000 and SureLife with $200. “I’d like to thank some of the businesses that also help me with my tournaments: Nitro Boats, Bass Pro Shops, Waterloo Rods, Mercury Motors, Bayou Outdoors and Perkins Performance.”

Stan Lawing and Bass Champs show host John McCalmont brought in the 2nd place stringer weighing 17.72 pounds. Their win earned a check for $2,250 and then Skeeter Boats doubled their winnings for being the highest finishing qualified Skeeter Boat team. They also enjoyed the Fun N Sun Bonus for an additional $500.

Gary Harrison caught the biggest bass of the day weighing 7.68 pounds. Fishing with partner Robert Lewis, their plan was to fish deep. “We really thought they’d be sitting in deep water, but they weren’t,” Robert explained. They meandered into a cove Robert had done a little pre-fishing in. “We went way back in one of the branches of the cove.” Throwing a Yellow Magic topwater lure, about 8:00 Gary got the big bite. “The big one was our first keeper. She was sitting in about 2’ of water and when he hooked her she came up and did a tail dance. I knew right away it was time to get the net.” That one catch was worth $750, plus they received another $500 for their 14th place overall finish. “We won last month on Cedar Creek. Today we’re just glad we made the championship!”

With the season at a close, the points have been tallied and the Anglers of the Year determined. In a tight race to the finish, Scotty Wenzel and Robert Case, Jr topped the field to win this prestigious title. In addition to bragging rights, their entry fees for the 2009 Bass Champs North Region season will be waived. Congratulations gentlemen!

The Championship will be a two day event October 18 & 19. The location will be on a neutral lake and will be kept secret until July 21st. No entry fees will be collected, the teams who qualified to fish it will be vying for $100,000 in an all cash pay-out. Only 100 teams will be fishing for this pot, and the top 20 finishers will get a portion of it. Good luck qualifiers!
