Wenzel & Case win Bass Champs on a very cold lake Tawakoni
By: Patty Lenderman

It was a battle of wills – man against fish and extremely cold weather March 8th on Tawakoni. Nearly 400 anglers from the North Region hit the lake, fishing for more than $50,000 paid back in cash & prizes. Scotty Wenzel & Robert Case Jr brought in the top weight and won $20,000!

The conditions were challenging to say the least. Anglers were faced with Air temperatures in the lower 20’s in the morning, lake levels rising with recent rains, water temperature dropping, and bass that seemed to be hyper sensitive. Several teams hit deeper water trying to find an elusive bite, the winning stringer was found in the brush.

There were only two limits brought in, a testament to the tough conditions these teams tried to outwit and overcome. Scotty Wenzel and Robert Case Jr. brought in the heaviest sack at 21.54 lbs, figuring they would probably get a check but had no thought that they would win! “We were just flipping heavy cover, grass mostly, with Lake Fork Tackle craws. There were about 15 other boats in the first area we tried, and we decided there was just too much pressure in that spot. We moved north to 2 mile bridge. The water was stained. Our hands were really cold, but the bite was so light we couldn’t fish with our gloves on” Scotty explained. “When we felt a bite and pulled up on the bait, the fish would just let go. I told Robert ‘you know, I think we’re just movin’ too fast’. So, we let our baits just sit. It was a battle of wills between us and the fish.” They managed to catch six keepers, one short fish, and they broke off on a big bass. “All of our fish were close to five pounds. We had one three pounder we just couldn’t get rid of. I thought sure we needed a kicker to win today.” They won 1st place with nearly a two pound margin, taking home $20,000.

Franky Morgan and Paul Erickson brought in the only other limit, weighing in 19.64 lbs to win 2nd place. They were presented with a $3,000 check.

A father & son duo placed 3rd with four fish weighing 13.78 lbs. “We just got lucky first thing in the morning” Chris explained. “We caught a pretty good fish in the back of a pocket about 3’ deep. About 30 minutes later we caught another.” They were using black & blue finesse jigs. “The rest of the day we just kept targeting those same type of areas, but we didn’t get but one bite on a spinnerbait until 3:00.” That’s when they caught their 4th and last fish. “We had a kicker on the line there at the end, but lost him.” Their 3rd place finish won a check for $2,000.
