Tyler Young & Trent Huckaby bring in 3 fish for nearly 30 lbs winning over $20,000 on Lake Falcon with Bass Champs
By: Patty Lenderman

As the South Region Bass Champs anglers headed to Lake Falcon for their final event, the number of bass they were allowed was decreased to three instead of the normal five allowed in most other tournaments. That did not stop these top notch anglers from bringing in incredible weights that looked like it came from five fish! The winners, Trent Huckaby and Tyler Young had nearly 30 pounds with THREE fish to win over $20,000.

It was an amazing weigh in as 48 teams brought in three fish limits exceeding the 20 pound mark. “What a way to wrap up a season!” stated Chad Potts, President of Bass Champs. At least nine bass were brought in over the 10 pound mark with several more bumping the line.

At the forefront of this entourage of huge fish coming through the weigh in line were the winners, Trent Huckaby and Tyler Young. Their three fish limit tallied 29.85 lbs on the scales, nearly a 10 pound average per fish. They were amazed and elated. “Everything just went our way today! It was the most phenomenal day of fishing either one of us have ever had in our lives.” It started as a stroke of luck and never stopped. “Our plan was that if we drew a low number for take off we would start at the dam. Well, we didn’t draw a low number so we went straight to our secondary spot.” They were throwing crank baits for their catch. “It was an area kind of on a point, 8’-12’ deep. We had a limit within 30 minutes.” They switched kinds of crank baits, and colors too. “That didn’t seem to matter – they wanted them all!” By 9am they had 26 pounds in the boat. “We must have caught 35 fish over 7 pounds, and by the end of the day culled at least five 9 pounders. If we could keep five, we would have had at least 48 pounds. We probably culled 45 pounds!” They said they were just in the right place at the right time. Tyler said “My hands are so tore up from catching and culling fish!” They all came out of that one spot, except when they made one run to the dam and added one of the fish from there. “We hit a couple of other spots, but nothing even resembled the action at our ‘honey hole’. It was absolutely unreal. We caught so many big fish……it was just a dream day.” This is Tyler’s second year fishing with Bass Champs, but his step dad and partner Trent has been fishing them for many years. “This is a first win for both of us. I’m glad we could do it together. It was truly a magical day.” Bass Champs presented them with the $20,000 1st place check, then Sure Life added to their winnings with a $200 bonus for using the product in their livewell. “The Power Tackle rods we were using made all the difference in the world for us. The Composite Cranker Rod landed every single fish. If you haven’t already, you need to give them a try – they really make a big difference.

Jaime Buitron and Terry Oldham also had a great day, bringing in a 27.11 lb limit that included an 11.14 lb kicker. They were close enough to the winners’ honey hole that they watched the action all day, albeit enjoying some of it themselves. They caught a lot of fish, and a lot of really good fish, but still knew by what they watched Huckaby and Young do all day long that for all of their efforts, they weren’t going to beat them. Buitron and Oldham still enjoyed a 2nd place finish and a check for $3,000.

3rd place was won by Tom Walls and Jeremy Bawcum, having a total weight of 26.55 pounds. “We went to one spot and stayed there all day long,” Jeremy explained. “The morning started out decent. The fish were on a crank bait pattern that carried on throughout the day.” They targeted areas 10’-15’ deep. “It had to have rock on it. Any kind of rock.” By 9am they had a limit in the boat. “We were able to cull up a few times, and Tom caught a really good kicker that weighed over 10 pounds.” This may be the final tournament for the South Region, but all Bass Champs tournaments are open to anyone who would like to participate, and this was Tom and Jeremy’s first one. They were awarded $2,000 for their 3rd place finish. “We’d like to dedicate this tournament to Jeremy’s brother in law Matthew Evens who passed away two weeks ago. We would also like to thank tacklenmore.com for their support.”

Out of all of the big bass that were caught that day, the biggest of them all weighed 11.51 lbs, brought in by David Ebner and Randy Stahl. That one fish earned them $1,000 for Big Bass honors and anchored their 22nd place overall finish for an additional $500 check.

Woodrow Taylor and Dennis Asher doubled their money fishing out of a qualified Skeeter boat going home with a $2,060 payday.

Tim Wilcoxson and Eric Elder won a free entry into any Bass Champs tournament within the next 12 months with the Dodge Ram Bonus.

William and Joseph Tompkins caught the last check awarded, finishing in 24th place with 22.76 pounds for $500.

The total payback was $48,700 which represents 104% for participating anglers. Bass Champs is well known for its top paybacks thanks to all of the participation and their great sponsors.

Congratulations to Chris Snyder and Patrick Starnes as they have earned the Anglers of the Year title for Bass Champs South Region 2012.
