Father -Son team of Tony and Travis Gergely take home over $20,000 on Lake Travis
By: BC Staff

May 7th marked the fourth of five events in the 2011 Bass Champs Central region season. As expected, Lake Travis was busy with pleasure boats, big wakes, and lots of limits. Over 300 anglers showed up for their chance at the guaranteed $20,000 first place check. The weather felt much like a summer day with temperatures in the high 90's and 20-30 mph winds.

The father-son team of Tony and Travis Gergely set the bar high bringing in 19.59 lbs early in the weigh-in ceremony and although there were some teams that were close, the Gergely's weight held up throughout the entire weigh-in and earned them over $20,000. Tony stated, "We aren't real familiar with this lake, we've only been on it four or five times and didn't have a chance to practice. After leaving take off this morning we only ran a mile or so before we decided to stop on bank that had a lot of rocks. We pulled out a Texas rig creature bait, and just went fishing. We pretty much stayed there the whole day and caught over 20 fish, ten of them were keepers. " The team also won the Sure-Life bonus. Tony continued, "With the temperatures being so hot today, we packed a lot of extra ice, and tried to keep our livewells around 68-72 degrees while also continuously adding "catch & Release" formula throughout the day. We only won by .18 pounds so any type of penalty would have cost us a lot of money. Fish care on a day like this takes more work, but it definitely paid off in the end."

The second place team of Lynnwood and Lynn Pierce Jr. weighed in 19.41 lbs and earned $3000 on the day. When asked how they caught their fish, Lynn stated, "We stayed in about 10-15 ft of water all day throwing soft plastic jerk-baits on rocky points. It seemed like the fish were relating to bigger rocks and any type of brush on gradual sloping banks. We caught a lot of fish, and culled several times."

Donnie Ross and Kenny Clifton finished in 3rd place on the day with 18.09 lbs to earn $2000. Kenny stated, "It was great day, but it could have been better. We lost some big fish today that would have definitely put us on top of the leader board. We threw Texas rigged worms and creature baits all day in about 10-12 ft of water. Normally we don't lose many fish throwing Texas rigs, but sometimes it happens, and it cost us a lot of money today." The team is currently sitting in 2nd place in the Angler of The Year standings and needs to have a great finish at the final event to win that title.

Bret Stafford and Ronnie Trower won Big Bass of the event with a 6.85. They also won 6th place overall and earned $2,450 for their efforts, including the Costa bonus and Line-X bonus.

The Central region will finish up the regular season next month on Lake Belton. The weigh in location has been moved to Blora park for that event on June 11th.
