Scott David and Harold Moore sight fish their way to over $20,000 with 21.10 lbs on LBJ
By: Patty Lenderman

Big bass were lurking at Lake LBJ for Bass Champs Central Region anglers April 2, 2011. Participants enjoyed a 105% payback as they scoured the lake for big kickers, and many found them. Harold Moore and Scott David covered a lot of water to cash in on over $20,000 in winnings!

“We site fished all day, and hit a lot of spots,” Harold Moore reports. Using craw worms, they visited several areas they had found big fish in before. “We didn’t catch a lot of fish, only boated 7 keepers. Scott had broken off initially when we had our first chance at our kicker (7.31 lbs). He said not to worry about it though, re-tied and let her rest a little while. About 20 minutes later we went back and he caught her. We’ve been blessed this week, and thank the Lord for being with us.” Their best five fish weighed 21.10 lbs. The team won the guaranteed 1st place purse of $20,000 as well as the $200 Sure Life Live Release bonus.

In 2nd place with 18.31 lbs was the team of Tom Gridley & Scott Meads. “We had a good day.” After catching a few in their first spot, they made a move and found bigger fish to wrap up a limit. “Once we had five in the well, we ran around a lot trying to cull. We ended up going back to that second spot and caught another six pounder. The team targeted rock piles and main lake points with watermelon red Carolina rigged speed worms. “They bit real well around mid morning, then there was a lull for a few hours. After 1:00 they started biting again, but we were never able to cull our last 1 ½ pounder.” Tom runs a ranch when he’s not fishing, while Scott is a police officer. “We’d like to thank Bass Champs for hosting these tournaments. We really enjoy fishing them.” The team received $3,000 for their 2nd place finish.

Just ounces behind was the team of Eric Crumley and Garrett Koslan, winning 3rd place with 17.93 lbs. “We had a good draw – boat #1,” Eric began. They had their work cut out for them, the lake conditions had changed since practice. “Our morning did not start out well. At 10:30 we still didn’t have a single fish in the boat.” They came to a cut, and using white flukes, they found their fish. “The fish just turned on. In back to back casts, we got a four and a six pounder.” Changing to a Texas rigged brush hog, Eric caught their 7.23 lb kicker. “These bass were moving up to spawn. We started having a little boat trouble, so to be sure we made it in on time we cut our day a little bit short and came on in.” the team won $2,000 for their day on the lake, and Eric would like to thank his wife, parents and kids. They were all at the weigh in to support the team.

Ronny Anthony caught the Big Bass of the day weighing 8.08 lbs, fishing with his dad Wayne. The team headed to an area they had found a week before, around docks. “We were using green pumpkin finesse worms on shaky heads.” Using very light line on spinning reels, they were dead sticking their baits in 8’-10’. “When she hit, she just started taking drag. I had to be very careful fighting her on that light line! It took about 20 minutes to get her in, thank goodness there wasn’t anything around for her to get tangled in.” The team received $1,000 for this catch, adding to their $1,000 win for 8th place overall. Adding to that was several sponsor incentive bonuses, including the Dodge bonus, Costa, and WFN bonuses. Wayne is a supervisor at Fort Hood, while Ronny works there as a mechanic. “I’d like to thank Bass Champs for always hosting great tournaments. I’d also like to thank my dad. We’re best friends and he’s a really great partner.”

Allen Shelton and Brad Drake doubled their money with the Skeeter Double Money Bonus as the highest team in a qualified Skeeter boat.

The team with the most points at the conclusion of all five events will be crowned Anglers of the Year, and all entry fees will be waived for them in 2012 for that region.
