Barbour goes solo on Tawakoni and wins $20,000 from Bass Champs
By: Patty Lenderman

Chris Barbour took jackpotting to a whole new level when he entered the Bass Champs North Region team tournament on June 19, 2010. Going solo, it was the second time fishing the circuit, he topped a field of 170 teams to win $20,000.

“I just had a feeling everything was going to work for me today,” Barbour began. “It was a great day. I had a spot picked out about a mile from the tournament site, and when I got there no one was around.” He had found a little pile of rocks in deep water that was holding some good fish. “I had a limit in about an hour using worms and swim baits, then was able to cull a few times until 10:00. Then the bite just quit.” It was hot, and he was trying to take good care of the fish in his livewell. “I nursed them, kept them cool, did everything I could for them.” About 2:00 he noticed that one was beginning to look weak, so he decided to go ahead and weigh in early to get all of his fish in the oxygenated live release tanks and save the fish. “I didn’t know if I had messed up weighing in an hour early.” He called his wife after weighing his fish, and they both had a long wait as the rest of the field brought in their creel. He had 23.98 lbs, taking initial lead position, but would it hold? It was agony for the next few hours until the last man weighed and the scales officially closed. Barbour’s weight held for a 1st place finish and a $20,000 check! “I didn’t have a chance to call my wife before the standings were posted on the web and she saw it on there that I had won. She really freaked! I didn’t get to do a lot of fishing this year, but next year I will fish all of Bass Champs tournaments. Watch out guys – next year I’m shooting for Angler of the Year!”

The day for the 2nd place winners Kevin Dritschler and Mike Coleman went quite differently. They didn’t have any fish in their livewell until after 10am. They had six different spots picked out that they made a milk run out of. From docks to brush piles, they just kept circling their run, working for every fish. “We caught some of our fish off of docks, using crank baits. Most of them came off of brush piles in 5’-10’ using beavers,” Dritschler explained. “It was so hot out there. After 10:00 we finally started catching some keepers.” At 2:00 they caught their 5th and final fish weighing 8.98 lbs which also won Big Bass of the tournament. “We lost another between 8-10 pounds. It just came unbuttoned.” Their total weight came to 21.33 lbs to win 2nd place and $3,000. That’s not all. They doubled that being the highest finishing qualified team in a Skeeter Boat. Their Big Bass was worth another $1,000, then they also won the WFN bonus, Hooters bonus, Costa bonus AND the Fun and sun bonus. “We sure would like to thank Skeeter Boats and Fun N Sun Boating Center for their support!”

3rd place was won by Landan Ware and Russell Lee with 20.55 lbs. “We hit a lot of willow bushes today,” Landan began. Initially throwing spinnerbaits, they landed a 5 and a 6 pounder fairly early. “The bite was kind of slow. We hit some docks, pitching jigs and spinnerbaits anywhere from 5’-2’ deep. It took 3 hours to put a limit together, but the bite was better at the bushes.” The team won $2,000 and would like to acknowledge Power Tackle Rods and Fun N Sun Boating Center for their support.
Tournament statistics:

While most divisions are wrapping up this month, the North Region still has one to go. Their first event in January was cancelled due to dangerous winter weather. (Nice to remember the good old cold days for a moment!) The final event for the North region will be held September 11 at Cedar Creek. After that all qualifying teams will head to Toledo Bend for the Series Championship, October 9th & 10th. A $50,000 cash payback is guaranteed between the top three places. This is a no entry fee event for the qualified teams with side pot options available.

The race for Anglers of the Year is too close to call. With only one event left to determine the winners, here is the Angler of the Year points race update:
678 Tommy Climer, Jr & Tony Climer
677 Allen Shelton & Scott Dean
660 Lee Yowell & Brian Schott
647 Mike Manrose & Gary Kinard
646 Steve Lynam & Scott Shultz
