Bass Champs South Region anglers setting new records on Falcon
Four sacks over 40 pounds, Harman & Clifton top them all
By Patty Lenderman

Skeeter Bass Champs South Region anglers had an explosive event on Lake Falcon February 20, 2010. A record setting field of 233 teams raised the bar to all new heights. Four sacks over 40 pounds were brought in, twenty-one sacks over 30 pounds, and it took over 28 pounds to earn a check in 31 places paid!

The weather has also gone from one extreme to the next. Just one week ago several parts of Texas was blanketed in snow, but on this day the temperatures rose to the mid 70’s, partly sunny skies and a gentle breeze. The water temperatures are also slowly rising, and is now in the mid 50’s.

Of all the sacks brought in over 40 lbs, Mike Harman and Kenny Clifton had the heaviest weighing 41.90 lbs. They targeted a secondary point near a major creek and hit the jackpot. “We were throwing Carolina rigs with a variety of baits,” Harman reported. They quickly put a limit together in 20’-27’ of water. “Our initial limit probably weighed around 32 pounds. We caught a lot of fish, and threw back a ton of six pounders. After 10:00 things slowed down, then we caught a few seven pounders and one around 9 late.” The team won the guaranteed 1st place purse of $20,000 and the $200 Sure Life Bonus for using the product in their livewells. “I’d like to thank my wife and family for their support, as well as Big Bass Candy and PJ Jigs.”

2nd place was won by Glenn and Ryan Erskine with a 41.56 lb limit. “The first two hours were bad. We lost a lot of fish,” Glenn said. “In our third spot we loaded up.” They hit the jackpot at a rocky point fishing 22-24’ deep. “By 9:30 we had a small limit, about 15 pounds. The fish were schooled up, and we were catching them with nearly every cast.” Using a variety of baits including a football head jig, Texas rigged worms and spinnerbaits, they kept catching and culling until they had five eight pound cookie cutters in their livewell. “We probably culled 35 pounds of fish. There were lots of shad in the area, and the bass were fat and healthy.” Glenn has been fishing with Bass Champs for the past five years, since he was 17 years old. In his first tournament, at Choke Canyon, he missed the win by .02 lbs. Not quite that close this time, the team won 2nd place and $5,000.

Laredo, Texas anglers Andres Flores and Juan Castillo also had over 41 lbs, registering a total of 41.02 for their 3rd place finish. Their day started out slow, and at 10:00 they only had one two pound bass in their livewell. Shortly after that, throwing a watermelon Big Bite Trick Stix in 6’-8’ of water, the big one hit. “I thought I was stuck on a tree!” Andres tried to free his lure. “I pulled and pulled. Then I saw the line was moving and knew it was a big fish!” After getting it in and putting it in the livewell, it was too big to fit well so they brought it in to be weighed. It registered at 11.70, the biggest of all the double digit bass weighed in. “We went back to that spot, but didn’t catch anything else until 2:30, throwing a tilapia colored Fighting Frog from Big Bite Baits.” With that they caught a 7 and a 9 pounder to add to their creel before heading in. They received $3,000 for their 3rd place finish, $1,000 for Big Bass and received the Costa and WFN Bonus. “We thank the Lord for giving us our fish today. We would also like to thank Bass Champs for putting on such a great tournament trail. Also thank you to Costa, World Fishing Network, and the people of Zapata and Laredo.”

“After the 11.70 Big Bass was registered, there were a ton of 10 pounders we didn’t even weigh for Big Bass,” reported Chad Potts, President/Bass Champs. “We also offered the "ZERO" bonus for this event to help conserve as many fish as possible. When there are so many fish caught in a tournament, we offer a $500 drawing for all teams that elect to release their fish. Over 100 teams released their fish instead of weighing in once they found out they didn't have enough to get a check. Many of those teams had sacks over 20 pounds.”

The last team to receive a check was 31st place anglers Luis Elizondo and Luis Elizondo Jr with 28.42 lbs.
