Romans and Kennedy win AOY in two regions!
By: Patty Lenderman

It was a scorcher on Tawakoni June 27 as Bass Champs North Region wrapped up the final 2009 tournament. Dee Trammell and Butch Huie had a commanding win over 157 teams to win $20,000. Anglers of the Year for the North Region were determined and the field enjoyed a 105% overall payback in cash and prizes.

Dee Trammell and Butch Huie won the tournament with room to spare with a 24.12 lb limit. They managed a few early on topwater baits. As the day heated up they moved to deeper water, around 12-14 feet then finished up their bag using Texas rigged Berkley Power worms. Bass Champs presented them with the guaranteed 1st place purse of $20,000.

Brothers Mike and Rob Burns won 2nd place with their 22.56 lb limit. They tried for a shallow bite in the morning, but by 10:00 only had a four pounder in the boat caught on a topwater lure. “We had to do something different, that wasn’t working out for us,” Mike explained. “Around noon we moved out to fish a little deeper, about 11 ft.” They tried a myriad of areas including docks, weeds, rocks, trees – they found them holding in a creek. “We caught a 6 ½ pounder right off the bat and then Rob caught our kicker next.” Their kicker weighed 8.52 lbs and was the Big Bass of the tournament. “We only caught one more, around four pounds.” Just shy of a limit, their weight held for a 2nd place finish worth $3,000. Adding in $1,000 for Big Bass then doubling their money being the highest finishing qualified team in a Skeeter Boat, plus the Fun N Sun Bonus of $500 the team enjoyed an $8,500 payday. “We’d like to thank everyone who helps us out – Academy, H2O lures, Skeeter Boats and Fun N Sun.”

Mike Kernan and David Weber took 3rd place with 19.16 lbs. “We started out fishing in an area where we saw feeding bass. Didn’t catch anything there. Our second spot had a grass mixture and we caught our first fish on a buzz bait. After that we were flipping a brush hog along the weed line and caught another.” The team had to keep switching tactics and worked hard for their limit. “After that we went to a rocky area using square bill crank baits. Our best fish was caught there, about 6 ½ pounds.” Their fish weren’t bunched or stacked, and the team kept moving on the hunt after them. “Our 4th fish came off a frog, and it was just barely a keeper. We moved again to the launch cove and caught another one off the frog, it was a little better.” Time was running out, they needed to cull that smallest fish. “We moved to a nearby cove and threw crank baits and was able to cull that fish.” Their efforts paid off with a 3rd place $1,800 win. “We’d like to thank Fun N Sun, Skeeter Boats, Yamaha, Strike King, Lake Fork Tackle, Power Tackle Rods and Browns Boat Repair for their support.”

The Angler of the Year race has seen a lot of shifting in the standings throughout the season. Leslie Kennedy and Trevor Romans has steadily climbed to the top and achieved the title for the North Region. They also participate in the Central Region and won the AOY title in that region! This is the first time a team has ever achieved AOY titles in two regions the same year. Congratulations!

All teams that have entered all five events automatically qualify to fish the Championship presented by Yamaha with a guaranteed 1st place purse of $50,000. There is no entry fee to participate, and it will take place on Lake O.H. Ivie October 3rd & 4th. There will be an optional side pot teams can enter with a 100% payback. The top 10 teams in AOY standings will receive free side pot entries.

“We’d like to thank everyone who fished with us this year. It has been a phenomenal season in all the regions, and thanks to you and our great sponsors Bass Champs tournament trail just keeps getting bigger and better. Good luck to everyone fishing the Championships!” – Chad Potts, President / Bass Champs
