Poboril & Powe top 244 teams at Bass Champs on Lake Belton to win over $20,000
By: Patty Lenderman

May 2nd marked the fourth of five events for the Central Region Bass Champs anglers. With 244 boats entered, a dominant presence was on Lake Belton with top notch competition. The bass were in a transition mode from spawn to post spawn, but the top teams discovered the right pattern to cash in on part of the nearly $60,000 paid out in cash and prizes.

Gerald Poboril of Temple, TX and Jack Powe from Killeen had done their homework, tracking the bass for weeks. They had found a solid consistent pattern at rock piles in 18’ depths, then mapped out a milk run of about a dozen spots to hit during the tournament. “We had a real good day,”
Gerald reported. “At our first spot, on the second cast, we lost a five pounder. After that we boated five keepers, then headed to our next area to try to find some bigger ones.” They quickly started culling, having caught a 5 ½ pounder on a ring fry rigged on a drop shot with 10 lb test line. “We also boated a 3 lb small mouth, then went to another spot.
Between 10:30 & 11:00 I caught our 8.04 lb kicker.” Staying with the drop shot and only hitting deep rock piles, they guessed catching around 30 bass all day. “This is the first time we’ve won 1st place. We were due.”

The team has had several 2nd and 3rd place wins to their name. “We just got lucky.” Weighing in 22.78 lbs, Bass Champs presented them with their 1st place guaranteed $20,000 check and they also received the $200 Sure Life Bonus. “We’d like to thank Power Tackle Rods, Marine Outlet of Temple, Bullet Boats, Humminbird and MinnKota.”

Randy Grounds of Horseshoe Bay, TX and Randall Maxwell of Marble Falls had 21.00 pounds to win 2nd place. Their bait of choice were green pumpkin jigs with matching craw trailers, also in 18’ depths. “We probably hit six different spots today,” Randy recalled. “Mid day was the best bite for us.” Catching two nice five pound small mouth bass then a 7.60 lb kicker, they were on the quality bass they needed. There was just one they couldn’t quite cull that weighed 2 lbs 6 oz. “We were 3rd on LBJ, 2nd today, maybe we’ll be 1st on Travis!” The team won $5,000 and would like to thank Highlander Restaurant for their support.

The Big Bass of the tournament weighed 9.60 lbs and was caught by Paul Stokes of Temple, TX fishing with John Guerra. “We had spent all morning chasing shallow bass. Caught a lot, there just wasn’t any size to them.
Around 11:30 we finally started fishing a little deeper.” They headed to a main lake point and fished a rock pile in about 18’. There were other boats in the same area, but they focused on a 10 yard stretch. Paul was using a Carolina rigged 10” worm, and just jerking it along with the wind.
At 1:00 she bit. “I knew it was a good one as soon as it hit. I didn’t know it was that big until she jumped out of the water!” That catch was worth $1,000 – nearly doubling their 12th place overall win. “We’d like to thank Bass Champs for putting on a great tournament. We really enjoy fishing this circuit!” They would also like to acknowledge Cliff Brown of Texas Boat World.

With only one tournament to go, the Angler of the Year race is well underway.

865 pts Trevor Romans & Leslie Kennedy
