| Killingsworth & Peace take the win at Cedar Creek in Bass Champs North Region |

You know what they say – when the going gets tough, the tough get rough! Cedar Creek was the destination for the second North Region tournament March 14, 2009. Anglers from every corner of the state converged fishing for the $48,200 purse. Twenty four teams enjoyed a part of the cut, but it was Brett Killingsworth and Ray Peace who won the lion’s share of $20,000 weighing in the heaviest sack.
Cedar Creek Lake is the fourth largest lake in Texas, and just a short drive from Dallas. Normal pool level for the lake is 322 feet above mean sea level. This past week a massive cold front marched its way across Texas bringing with it much needed rain. There has been so much rain that the lake rose nearly six inches overnight to 320.15 feet during this event. The water was murky and muddied up from the inflow coming in via creeks and other tributaries. The cold front also dropped the water temperature significantly, and between those two elements bass have backed off to deeper water and become harder to catch.
There was only one sack brought to the scales in excess of 20 pounds. Brett Killingsworth and Ray Peace brought in a five bass limit that weighed 21.50 lbs to take the win. “We started out at rocks” Ray explained. “I caught a 7 pounder right away on a War Eagle spinnerbait. Brett put a couple of small keepers in the livewell, and after a while we decided to move.” They were using a variety of baits, including Carolina rigged green pumpkin brush hogs and Bandit crank baits in Taco Salad and Mistake colors. When they arrived at their second area, Ray caught another seven pounder followed by a five pounder that Brett reeled in. The hunt for the winning limit included backs of pockets, boat houses and a rocky point in depths up to 12’. Their efforts and diversity paid off and they were presented with the guaranteed 1st place purse of $20,000. This is the teams’ first year to fish a Bass Champs season. 2nd place was won by Nick Carrocio and Philip Webb weighing in 19.88 lbs. According to Nick, they had a couple of areas they planned to fish, but the first spot produced nothing. “We made a move up the lake to our second area, and caught five keepers using Spittin Fire Jigs with Paca Craw trailers.” Once they had a limit in the boat, they moved around trying to find their kicker. “Brush wasn’t producing anything for us. We caught our fish off of docks and other isolated structure.” They managed to find their kicker weighing in at 8.20 lbs. The team won $3,000 for their 2nd place finish.
Billy Johnson and Perry Taylor brought in a five fish limit weighing 19.26 lbs winning 3rd place overall and among their creel was a 7.36 lb kicker. Being the highest finishing anglers in a qualifying Skeeter boat, they doubled their $2,000 winnings to $4,000 with the Skeeter Double Money Bonus. They received another $500 from Fun N Sun as well.
The biggest bass of the tournament was weighed in by George Bryan and Bill Steelman. She weighed 8.38 lbs and the team enjoyed a $1,000 Big Bass check.

The team with the highest points at the end of the season in each region will be declared Anglers of the Year. The teams that have earned this prestigious title will have all entry fees for the 2010 season waived for the region they earned the title in.
