Whited & Polkinghorn win more than $25,000 at the Bass Champs Central Region Finale on Choke Canyon
By: Patty Lenderman

The wind howled, engines roared and 159 boats headed out on Choke Canyon to collect part of the $46,000 purse paid out in cash and prizes June 7 for the last tournament of the season. The competition was so intense there were three tied weights in the money. Lots of big bass were brought to the scales, including several in the double digit range. Nearly 30 pounds won the tournament, and the biggest bass of the event was nearly 12 pounds!

Charles Whited & Bill Polkinghorn brought in the heaviest sack of the day at 28.40 lbs. They started their day in shallow water, 5’-8’ over hydrilla with swim baits. “We stayed in one area about 5 or 6 hours” Charles explained. “I’d estimate catching around four limits of fish, but didn’t have any big bass.” The wind was relentless and they were trying to stay out of it as well as they could. Later in the day they switched to Carolina rigged Power Worms and backed out to deeper water. “We dragged our rigs in 25’-28’ depths. Bill hooked on to a monster bass and had it almost all the way into the net (within approximately 8”).” They got a good look at her, and estimated it weighing between 13 to 15 pounds. “It’s the classic ‘big one that got away’ story.” That was around 1:30, and was the last opportunity for them to cull again the rest of the day. Luckily, they did not need this monster bass to win. They took 1st place with nearly a pound to spare. “The real key for us today was a prototype bait from Power Tackle. It should be available in stores in a couple of months.” Their take-home winnings included $20,000 for 1st place, $5,000 from Skeeter Boats plus another $200 from Sure-Life products. “I’d like to thank Skeeter Boats and Bass Champs. This is a great tournament trail and we really enjoy fishing it. I’d also like to thank my sponsors Power Tackle.com, Texas Bass Tackle, Choke Canyon Lodge and Travis Engineers.”

There were two teams who shared 2nd place with exact weights of 27.56 each. Arlen and Matthew Hauschild, a father & son team had one of them. “Our day started out fairly good” Arlen said. “We had a limit by 9:30 and started culling up from there.” Their tactic included Carolina and Texas rigged 10” worms. “The wind was really blowing hard, and we were trying to stay out of it. We stayed in one place all day.” They were working a creek channel, dragging straight down the side of it in 18’-20’. “The morning bite was best, but we caught fish all day.” They were able to cull two limits, the biggest they put back in the water weighed more than four pounds. “We didn’t have any kickers, just five real good fish.” Their 2nd place win caught a check for $2,400. “I’d like to thank Seguin Insurance, Quantum Reels and Adams Quality Used Cars.”

JR Bryant and JJ Jackson shared the 2nd place win, but they also won big bass with their 11.88 pound kicker! “We started out by the dam with Texas rigged Culprit finesse worms in the grass” JJ explained. “All of these fish came out of deep water, near 30’. We had never been deep water fishermen, so we went out with a friend of ours Bo Barry last week and he taught us how to successfully fish in deep water. Today was a heck of a good day!” Their morning started out with four small keepers in the livewell by 8:30. It was then that JR hooked onto the 11.88 lb big bass. “He had never caught a fish that big on a Texas rig. It was huge! It hardly fit in the livewell.” Later, they headed across the lake to the South side to try another spot. JJ hooked onto their second kicker fish that also weighed more than 10 pounds! “It came up, jumped, danced on the water – there was no hiding it from the other boats around us. It was exciting.” They received $2,400 for their 2nd place tie plus another $1,000 check for Big Bass. “I’d like to thank Clint Foster, the Manager at Academy. He makes a point to share all the new (fishing) tricks with us. I’d also like to thank Bass Champs. This is a very well run outfit, clearly defined rules and a whole lot of fun.”
