Erskine Brothers rack ‘em up for a big win on Amistad in Bass Champs
By: Patty Lenderman

Bass Champs South Region hit Lake Amistad for the second time this year, ready to pay winning teams more than $60,000 in cash and prizes. Amistad has earned a reputation for big bass and big sacks, and 217 teams went after them. Glenn & Ryan Erskine brought home the win and $20,000 for 1st place.

Amistad is a deep, clear lake so lighter lines must be used to successfully trick those bass to take the bait. Tournament winners Glenn & Ryan Erskine chose 12# test line with their ¾ oz white Strike King Spinnerbaits in 13’-15’ of water. “We had a good day, didn’t lose any fish” Glenn began. “During practice we had been catching 30 pound sacks, so figured it would take 34 pounds to win. There are a lot of good anglers in this region.” They raced to their best spot and found the area under heavy pressure from other anglers. “We started catching fish right away, and had a good limit in the boat by 9:00.” Among the bass in their livewell, they had a nice 7.40 lb kicker, and their smallest was a two pounder. “We just kept hitting the same spot, and culled our smallest fish around 10:00. Our day was done at that point; we didn’t catch any more to cull with the rest of the day.” Their best five weighed in at 26.56 pounds, and to their amazement was the top weight of the tournament to win! “I started fishing Bass Champs three years ago when I was 17” Glenn explained. “Our first tournament was at Choke Canyon, and we lost by 0.02 ounces.” Today they topped the pack to win $20,000 plus another $200 from Sure-Life for having the product in their boat.

Bryan Estes & Zee Zetka won 2nd place with 25.26 lbs. “We started in an area that we had done well in last week” Bryan stated. “We didn’t catch anything. We went to another spot, and didn’t do well there either.” Having faith in their first area, they went back. “This time we caught a limit, and left again.” Using shad and perch patterned crank baits in 10’-20’, the bass were starting to bite for them. “We caught a six pounder in another area, and since the water temperature was warming up and our fish have been biting better in the afternoon, we went back to the first spot again.” They caught another limit of bass, and had a monster on the line. “She weighed all of 12 pounds! We had her to the boat, and then she just swam right out of the net. I can still see her swimming away. We had this one won.” They won $5,000 for their finish then doubled it with the Skeeter Bonus for being the highest finishing qualified Skeeter Boat team for a $10,000 day. Bryan and Zee also fish the Central Region of Bass Champs and will be going after another check next weekend!

Newcomers to the trail Randy Myers and Greg Cummings won 3rd place with their 24.18 lb limit. Heading to a wind blown point with hydrilla, their day started out just right. “On our first cast of the day we caught a four pounder” Randy said. He added that they caught their three biggest bass of the day during the first 20 minutes of fishing. “We were using crank baits and spinnerbaits. Greg landed their big bass on a crank bait tied to 10# test line in 20’ of water at 8:00 that weighed 9.52 lbs. After catching several nice bass in that area, “we headed to deeper underwater humps with football head jigs. We were able to improve our weight some in those areas.” This is only their second Bass Champs tournament, and they won 3rd place and $3,000 plus Big Bass for another $1,000. They also won the Abu Garcia REVO reel bonus, and each took home another reel.

Twenty nine places were paid in this event, and Matt Weaver & Josh Arp caught the last $500 check weighing in 17.30 lbs.
