Day & Balfor enjoy their first Bass Champs win at Choke Canyon
By: Patty Lenderman

Two sacks over thirty pounds, four bass more than 10 pounds brought in, and a brand new Bass Champs big bass record set! With over $47,000 up for grabs in cash and prizes, the Central Region of Bass Champs headed to Choke Canyon for their final event of the season. Brandon Day and Aurbrey Balfor brought in the winning sack, taking home more than $25,000!

“We drew boat #186" Brandon explained. “When we got to the spot we were planning to fish, we were surprised that no one was on it.” They had found a small area during practice holding quality bass. “This area was no more than 400 yards long.” Throwing Texas rigged 10" power worms, they flipped their baits at flooded trees about 15' deep. “We caught our first big fish around 7:30. The fish were scattered. It took most of the day to put a limit together.” Shortly after they put their fifth fish in the boat, they were able to cull a small fish. “After that I hooked onto a big one. I had here coming in, and right at the boat she came off. We got a good look at her, and she was a good ten pounder. That really hurt. It was hard to recover after that.” They did though, and boated their last big fish around 2:30. All of their fish weighed between six and eight pounds, for a total of 35.70 taking the win by more than a four pound margin! They were presented with a check for $20,000 for their 1st place win. They were fishing out of a 2006 Skeeter ZX 200, so they also won the Skeeter Bonus for an additional $5,000. Because they used Please Release Me in their livewell, they also won $200 from that sponsor.

In 2nd place with 31.20 lbs was the team of Jody Jackson & Loy White. “We started out catching four and five pounders, then caught our 10.66 big bass” Jodie said. “Grande Bass gave us the baits we caught all our fish on. They were Motor oil red flake 5" rattlesnake worms.” They sat their boat in 16', throwing their Texas rigs in 12'-14' with isolated bushes. “This is the second time we’ve used these baits - they’re just incredible!” They had a limit put together by 10:30, which included another bass in the nine pound range. “We had one small fish that we just couldn’t get rid of!” Bass Champs gave them $3,000 for their 2nd place win. “The day was a blessing!”

A new all time Bass Champs record for Big Bass was set by Rick Shock fishing with Jared Poole. “We were sitting in about 35', throwing at a drop off.” Rick was using a brown & green 3/4 oz Bass Pro Enticer jig with a watermelon red twin tail grub trailer. “She hit it at about 25' deep. I felt her suck it in. She ran to my right, I set the hook, and she came out of the water! She was just flying and peeling drag.” This fish put his 15 pound Big Game line to the test. “It was a constant fight. She never gave up. She was mean!” Rick said she completely jumped out of the water three times before he got her to the boat. “Jared did a great job netting her. When I finally got her to the boat, she was about to take another dive when he dipped her. It’s a good thing we were in open water so she couldn’t get tangled on anything. She was strong and could’ve gone anywhere she wanted to.” They won $1,000 and now hold the record for Bass Champs biggest bass. “I’d like to thank Tracker Marine, and (as National Team Captain) Nitro boats. I’d Also like to thank Strike King lures, Bass Pro Shops and Waterloo Rods.” Rick and Jared came in 7th place overall for an additional $1,040.
