The Bass Champs North Region started out their 2007 season on Cedar Creek in February, then came back on May 12 for their fourth event. 186 teams enjoyed a 108% payback of $52,250. While weights were tight past second place, Tommy Hasty and Johnny Vanover had a cushioned margin, winning by more than two pounds! They also won Big Bass with a double digit monster.

Cedar Creek has changed a lot since February. The lake is a lot higher, so for those that haven’t been here in a while it was a whole new ball game. The day was hot, with high pressure, blue bird skies and very little wind. For many, it was tough to find a bite taking all day to put a limit together.

How does it feel to win 1st place and $20,000? According to Johnny Vanover, it felt “finer than a frog hair!” Johnny and Tommy Hasty brought in the heaviest sack, weighing 18.88 lbs. “We started out in the same spot we fished in February” Johnny said. “We didn’t do real well there in February, but it is a real good spot for pre and post spawn bass.” He described it as a hump where two creeks crossed. “We sat in about 15' and threw up to about 10'. We were out in the main lake, a couple of hundred yards from the closest bank.” They were using a Carolina rigged watermelon french fry. “About the third cast, I hooked our big one. I knew as soon as I set the hook that it was a good fish, but I didn’t know she was that big! I told Tommy to get the net, and had to back off the drag a couple of times while trying to bring her in.” She weighed 10.88 lbs, winning Big Bass of the tournament. Throughout the day, they hit about 10 different spots, with four producing for them. Taking 1st place is quite a come-back for this team, finishing in the 20's last event. “I’m going to buy a new boat motor with this!” John stated. “Now we’re ready for Richland Chambers. I’d also like to thank the crew of Bass Champs for taking the time to retrieve our big bass out of the tank for pictures. It took a while to catch her!”

Michael & Rob Burns brought in the 2nd place limit weighing 16.70 lbs. “We hadn’t been out on this lake since the last Bass Champs tournament in February” Rob explained. “We drew a high number (for take-off), and so we just went out looking for a place to fish where there wasn’t another boat. We fished the dam, some docks, and some more docks.” Their day started out slow, not catching any keeper fish the first part of the morning. “Finally, around 9:00, we boated our first keeper. We planned on catching post spawn fish on cranks and topwater baits. There wasn’t much of a topwater bite, we caught most of them on crank baits.” At that point they targeted docks, secondary points and rip rap. We finally wrapped up a limit around 1:30. We weren’t worried, we knew we would wrap up a limit. The only cull we were able to make was with a three pounder, throwing back a 14".” They won $3,000 for their 2nd place finish.

Less than 1/4 of a pound behind them was Cory Waldrop and Craig Waltrop with 16.44 lbs, taking a 3rd place win. Corey said “We hadn’t had any pre-fishing. In fact, we hadn’t been on the lake for a year and a half! Mostly we focused on transition points and rocky places in 8'-12'.” They were using jigs and Texas rigged power worms. “It was a bad day of execution, but enough to make a check so I guess overall it was a pretty good day. We had three main areas that we wanted to hit, and ended up going to six or seven (spots). We had our limit in the boat by 9:30 and didn’t cull a singe time. All we had was three solid fish and two swimmers.” They would like to thank their sponsors Custom Angler Rods and Legend Boats. Bass Champs presented them with a $2,000 check.
