Shaw & Cagle pull out a big win on a tough day on Sam Rayburn at Bass Champs
By Patty Lenderman

Bass Champs East Texas Team Trail had a lot of surprises in store for the anglers and spectators on their third tournament of the year. After several weeks in a row of heavy tournament weights being brought in on Sam Rayburn, everyone expected another weekend of phenomenal bass. Nearly three hundred teams participated March 17th, and Bass Champs paid 40 places with $72,900 in cash. James Shaw and Randy Cagle won the tournament with the only sack over 20 pounds brought in.

It was a gorgeous day to be outside, and between participating anglers and weekend warriors, the parking at the boat ramp was overflowing and parking at the Umphrey Family Pavilion was also full. The day was warm with plentiful sunshine and a steady breeze with occasional gusts. Anglers used every minute allotted to fish, there were no early birds to the scales.

James Shaw and Randy Cagle were the third team to weigh in, bringing in a five fish limit weighing 20.08 lbs and establishing the Big Bass lead with their 7.82 lb kicker. While they knew they had a good sack, there were nearly three hundred teams yet to weigh in, and considering the size and weights that have come out of Sam Rayburn the past several weeks, they didn’t even consider that they might win. As the weigh in progressed, it became apparent that it was tough for most of the teams to find a bite.

Thomas Langham and Aubrey Brisendine took 2nd place with their 18.20 lb limit. “It was tough today!” Thomas began. “We were fishing flats and ditches with Texas rigs and spinnerbaits. We probably boated 20 fish, catching them in 2’-4’. The key was to slow roll the spinnerbaits and dead stick the rigs.” Their biggest bass weighed 8.64 lbs. They enjoyed a nice payday of $5,000 for their 2nd place finish.

Soon after they weighed in, Kyle Rowe and Vincent Neal slid into 3rd place with 18.06 lbs. “We started about mid lake,” Kyle began. “We wanted to go up North, but decided it was too windy. We were trying to go after bedding bass, but the water was too stained and we couldn’t see them. The bedding bass we did catch were small.” They caught their fish on a watermelon red wacky worm in a stretch about 50-60 yards long. They were presented with a $4,000 check for 3rd place.

Bob Bryant and Victor Shepherd weighed in a total of 17.64 lbs, and took Big Bass with their 9.42 lb sow. Bob hooked this big bass with a BJ Wanker crank bait in the back of the grass about 7’ deep. “I caught her around 1:15” Bob said. “She was right on a main lake point. Victor did a real good job netting her!” They won $1,000 for that one bass, plus another $3,000 for their 4th place finish.

Bass Champs pays $250 for the smallest single bass weighed in. On a day like this, there were more teams trying for the smallest bass award than for the biggest. Shaun Compton and Gary Grossman won this check with their 1.12 lb catch.

At 5:00 the scales closed, and much to their surprise, James Shaw and Randy Cagle had won the tournament! They were called to the stage to be presented with their $20,000 check for 1st place. “We found our fish at isolated bushes on secondary points. The bass were in 7’-8’, and we were using weightless flukes and Senko’s. We had to dead stick the baits, could not move them. Just put it out there and wait.” They only caught their five plus one more to cull.

Rounding out the top 10:
5th 16.32 lbs Artie Longron & Todd Soape
6th 15.02 lbs Martin Elshout & Mark Price
7th 14.84 lbs Lance Hughes & Scooter Clark
8th 14.36 lbs David Fox & Shalon Nash
9th 13.92 lbs Gary Robin & Wes Waters
10th 13.90 lbs Ray Beck & Shane Hilton
……..and last in the money……..
40th 10.50 lbs Rick Hollingsworth & Eric Hunt

There were 534 fish weighed in for a total weight of 1215.32 lbs, an average weight per fish of 2.28 lbs. Out of 297 teams, there were 66 limits brought to the scales and 153 zero’s.

The next East Texas region tournament will be May 5th on Toledo Bend at Cypress Bend Marina. Also, mark your calendars for the Dodge Mega Bass big bass tournament presented by Bass Champs. This one day hourly event will take place on Sam Rayburn July 29th, with one Dodge Truck given away as top prize every single hour!
