Ferdinando & Cox win their first Bass Champs event on Travis

The Bass Champs Central Region held their second event of five events on Lake Travis March 3rd. With Spring coming on the warmer days are pushing the bass into a pre-spawn pattern. 188 teams fished for more than $50,000 paid back in cash and prizes. Top weights were tight, but it was first time Bass Champs anglers Anthony Ferdinando and John Cox who won the tournament, cashing in with a $20,000 win.

Between the full moon and warming water, the bass are moving up, staging for spawn. The morning started out chilly, in the low 30's, but quickly warmed to 60 degree temperatures with steady wind. Lake Travis is almost 40 feet low, so trailering was not an option. Several boat ramps are high and dry.

Making their Bass Champs debut, Anthony Ferdinando and John Cox won their first ever Bass Champs tournament “It started out fast in the morning” John explains about their day. “We caught three fish in the first 15 minutes. Then there was a lull, but we managed to complete a limit by 8:45. It was a small limit, only about 12-13 pounds.” They were pitching brown jigs with green pumpkin twin tail trailers on a 20' ledge that dropped to 40'. “We were dragging the jigs off the ledge, and the bass were biting on the fall.” With only about 30 minutes left to fish, John landed their 6.16 lb kicker that brought their total weight to 16.30 lbs, winning a check for $20,000.

Michael Waldrop and Jack Waldrop Sr. slid into 2nd place with 16.14 lbs. Michael gave his dad all the credit for finding the fish. “We went to his spots, and caught all of our fish early. After 11:00 we didn’t catch any more keepers. We fished the mid lake area with jigs, spinnerbaits and crank baits.” Michael caught their biggest, 6.06 lbs, on a crank bait. “Dad is the best net man in the whole world!” They enjoyed a $3,000 win.

Jason Buchanan and Charles Whited took 3rd place with 14.88 lbs. They were fishing secondary points with crank baits in 5'-10'. “We hit a lot of spots, probably around 20 or so. We caught about 10 - 12 keepers, our biggest was 6.64 lbs. We just kept moving. Some spots we would only make about five casts and then head to the next spot.” Their 3rd place check was for $2,000 but being the highest finishing qualified Skeeter Boat team, they doubled their winnings with another $2,000 check from Skeeter.

Danny Fiser and Jackie Volek won 4th place with 14.22 lbs, and won Big Bass honors with their 8.54 lb’r. “We started out in our normal spots, but then the wind shifted. We went to a point on the opposite side of the lake, and the first fish was that 8 pounder.” They were throwing crank baits on the drops at 6'-10' inside the points. “We culled ounces all day.” They won $1,200 for 4th place, another $1,000 for Big Bass. Since they had a new Abu Garcia REVO reel in their boat, they won the Abu Garcia bonus and each received a new REVO reel.

Rounding out the top 10:
5th $1,100 13.08 lbs Corey Costello & Wayne Harm
