Hudson and Kingsbery Top another record setting field on Lake Amistad for their second win in a row.
By: Patty Lenderman

2/24/07

Albert Hudson and Bill Kingsbery are coming on strong in the South Region with back to back wins on Amistad. Another record setting turnout with 250 teams, over $63,000 in cash and prizes was paid out in thirty four overall places. Amistad is known for big bass and big stringers. There were no disappointments in that department with several kickers over 9 pounds, and the Big Bass of the tournament weighed more than 11 pounds!

The morning began with steady winds at 8-10 mph. More wind was in the forecast, so the teams were allowed to trailer to ramps closer to their fishing holes. As the day progressed, the wind steadily got stronger, with gusts over 40 mph. The waves were in the 6 foot range, coming over the bows of boats in unprotected areas of the lake. Even with these extreme conditions, nearly half the field managed to bring in their five fish limits.

Albert Hudson and Bill Kingsbery weighed in 29.96 lbs, winning for the second month in a row by a mere ½ pound margin. They said they caught their fish in the drops, around 20', slow rolling a 1 oz spinnerbait. Their biggest bass weighed 9.88 lbs. When they won last month on Amistad, they missed out on the Skeeter bonus. They took a part of their $20,000 check to purchase a qualified Skeeter boat, and this time won an additional $5,000. Because all of their fish were alive and they used Sure-Life products in their livewell, they received another $200 bonus. So far they’ve won over $45,000 this year!

Lee Leonard and Bill Benton won 2nd place with 29.42 lbs. “We caught most of our fish on 10" power worms and 6" Senko’s, both watermelon. We were dragging the Carolina rigs over deep grass, about 20-30' deep. We stayed as protected from the wind as we could, mostly fishing pockets.” By 9:30, they had a limit in the boat but it only weighed around 20 pounds. “We culled a few times, and had our last cull at 1:00.” They had a couple of nice kickers in their bag, one at 9.02 lbs and another over 8. They were awarded $5,000 for their 2nd place win. Lee said “I’d like to thank our sponsor, Wood Brothers Custom Rods.”

3rd place was won by Scott Gover and Richard Broxton with 27.98 lbs. “It was very windy, and very wet where we were” stated Gover. We were taking waves over the bow of the boat. We finished in 2nd place last month here, so we fished the same spots again.” They were using a Stan Sloan 1 oz spinnerbait, and a Stan Sloan Wingding, which is something like a chatter bait. “We went from one end of the lake to the other. The areas we fished were 16-20' deep, trees in some spots, grass in others. All of our areas were on main lake points. We wore out our trolling motor battery fighting the wind.” They put together a limit by 7:45, and culled nine times after that to get to their final weight. “This is an awesome lake, and fun to fish. Bass Champs runs a great tournament, and we really enjoy fishing with them.” They were presented with a $3,000 check.

The Big Bass of the tournament was brought in by Adam Pereira and Arlen Hauschild weighing 11.16 lbs. They reported catching her on a purple jig in the brush around 8' deep. They received a check for $1,000.
