Robby Rose goes solo and wins again!

Robby Rose single handedly wins Bass Champs at Cedar Creek
by Patty Lenderman

Cedar Creek has been stingy with the bite for the last couple of weeks, but it didn’t stop 235 teams in the Bass Champs North Region from competing for nearly $60,000 in cash and prizes February 11, 2007. Due to recent rains, the lake has been steadily rising and churning the water making for a muddy mess. Back to back cold fronts has kept the water temperatures in the 40's, and bass aren’t very aggressive in those conditions. All-time Bass Champs money winner Robby Rose went out by himself and brought back one of only two limits brought to the scales, taking 1st place, winning $20,000!

At take-off, the temperatures were right at the freezing mark, laying down a blanket of frost. The day warmed to the low 50's under partly cloudy skies. The water was cold, and about the color of chocolate milk. This, along with the rising lake levels, it took some real skill - and some luck to boat any fish.

Robby Rose weighed in a 5 fish limit of 17.92 pounds to win the tournament. Considering that this was but one of only two limits brought in, he obviously had some tricks up his sleeve. “After a terrible two-bite practice day the weekend before, I knew downsizing would be the key. Today, I managed 6 bites on a black & blue Strike King Bitsy Jig.” One of the things he downsized was his line. “I dropped to an eight pound test line, working the jig in 8-14'. I only went to three different areas, but really soaked them for all they were worth.” With the lighter line, he had to be a lot more careful on his hook-sets so he wouldn’t break off. “I had to work the jig really slow.” How slow? “Forget watching paint dry, this was like having to wipe the rust off your hook between casts!” He fished deeper fish, ones that were less affected by the fluctuating water levels, near break lines. “When I did get a bite, all I felt was heaviness. With 8 pound test line, you just have a fear of breaking off if you set the hook too hard.” This is Robby’s 5th win in a Bass Champs team event. After today, his winnings total $120,000 so far! “I’d like to thank Bass Champs, Allstar Marine, and most important our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Mark Forbes and Adrian Barnes won 2nd place with a five fish limit weighing 16.92 lbs. “We were fishing with a 3/8 oz black & blue pig & jig” Forbes explained. “We had to work it real slow. Adrian caught our 6.60 lb kicker on his seventh pitch! We started out on a good note.” It had been tough for them all week in practice, and with the water coming up steadily over the past couple of weeks, they struggled to find some fish. “We just pitched around docks in 4'-8'.” All total they caught six keepers, culling once to their final weight. They won $5,000 for their 2nd place finish.

Rounding out the top 5 were:
3rd $3,000 11.74 lbs Chris Moore & Hal Gay
4th $2,000 10.10 lbs Mike Kernan & David Weber
5th $1,200 9.18 lbs Paul Sewell & Mike Adam

Two teams tied for the final check, Casy Merriman & Jeremy Grandstaff tied with John McCalmont and Stan Lawing with 4.16 lbs and a received a check for $300 with each.
John Isaacs and Ryan Padgett weighed in one fish, that won them a lot of money. Their fish weighed 7.72 lbs winning $1,000 for Big Bass plus another $1,070 for 8th place overall. They received another $1,070 for being the highest finishing team in a qualified Skeeter Boat!
