Father & Son duo top the pack at Bass Champs on Sam Rayburn
By: Patty Lenderman

(May 3, 2014) There were tournaments galore going on at Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend as Bass Champs made their fourth stop of the season to Big Sam. There were 123 teams who fished in this 130% payback event, which included a new Ford F-150 pickup truck offered for the 1st place team. Over $45,000 was dispersed in cash and prizes with a father & son team taking the big win.
The conditions were ripe for anglers to hunt down the three biggest bass they could, and several nice kickers were registered at the scales. The father and son team of Bob & Travis Signorin of Oakhurst, TX had the biggest of the bunch, anchoring their 1st place win.
The Signorin’s reported having a great day out on the lake, catching about fifty fish before days end using crank baits in 12-15’ of water. First their biggest fish was weighed, locking in at 9.35 lbs winning Big Bass of the tournament. When their other two fish were added, the total weight was 16.29 lbs, ultimately taking the 1st place win. Bass Champs sponsors helped sweeten their pot, getting another $200 from Costa Del Mar for wearing their sunglasses on stage as they weighed in the Big Bass of the tournament, and another $200 from Sure Life for using the product in their livewell. In addition they received $500 for their Big Bass.
2nd place winners Clint Kirby & Robert Kesler of Lufkin, TX fished in about the same depths, 17’, using a Texas rig approach. Their three bass limit weighed in at 15.41 lbs for a $2,750 payday.
Lumberton, TX angler Clay West had to fish by himself but had a successful finish at 3rd place with 14.63 lbs. He caught his fish in 10’-12’ using a Carolina rig, hooking about twenty bass throughout the day. He said he lost one about 5 ½ lbs that may have cost him the win. He was awarded a $1,500 check for his 3rd place finish.
Rounding out the top five included 4th place winners Rusty Clark & Cory Rambo with 14.59 lbs, winning a check for $1,200. They also received the $250 Talon bonus to add to their winnings. Ted Odell and Kevin Walker Jr won 5th place with 13.88 lbs and a check for $1,100. Their winnings were doubled to $2,200 being the highest finishing team in a qualified Skeeter boat.
All total $45,435 was paid back in cash and prizes to the top 16 teams. Gerald and Stephen Mitchell cashed the final $500 check with their 10.49 lb limit.
With only one event to go to determine Anglers of the Year for the East Region, the top five after four events are:
605 pts Rusty Clark & Cory Rambo
584 pts Brian Shook & Danny Iles
579 pts Brandon Davidson & Ben Matsubu
576 pts Rusty Harvey & Chris Harvey
571 pts Oscar Langele Jr & Philip Jardell
