Charles Bebber & Keith Caka beat the odds and take home $25,000 on Rayburn with 27.46 lbs.!
By: Gay Norton

Even the fog couldn’t put a damper on the great day that Mother Nature gave the 238 teams Saturday morning , February 19th. Bass Champs East Texas Region held their 2nd event of the season at the Umphrey Pavilion on lake Sam Rayburn. Is spring really here or was this just a teaser?

The big question amongst the spectators was, how much weight would it take to get in the money? Most guessed around 20 pounds. As it turned out, they were pretty close. Justin Cleveland and Justin Sowell were the last in the money with 18.18 lbs.

As the anglers started coming in, it was evident that a limit of fish was definitely not going to be a problem today. Many anglers stated that they caught fish all day but just couldn’t get a “big one” to bite. The baits of choice for the day was pretty much the same with everyone, traps, spinner baits and soft plastics on Carolina rigs.

The winning team of Charles Bebber and Keith Caka are no strangers to being in the top spot but they have been knocked out at the last minute on numerous occasions, stated tournament director, Chad Potts. They have placed 2nd and 3rd many times. This was their day to beat the odds with their nice limit of fish that weighed 27.46 lbs. The team stated that the first thing they wanted to do was thank God for their awesome day! “We caught over 50 fish today, but most of our weight came in the first 15 minutes”. They were targeting 2 - 4 foot of water with a custom painted prototype bait from 6th Sense Lures. They also caught some fish on a Big Bite bait on their Carolina rig and a senko. “We would like to thank Straight Shot Trucking, Big Bite Baits, Power Pole, Costa Del Mar and Power Tackle Rods”. Keith also stated that he would like to thank Just for Fun Watercraft Rentals.

Jason Wells and Vic Cooper came in 2nd place with their limit of fish that weighed 25.73 lbs. The team stated that once they got thru the fog situation, they worked their way up to the mid lake area and fished isolated grass patches with traps in 3 - 5 foot of water. “We caught about 4 limits today, the fish really bit for us well until about noon”. The team would like to acknowledge Hometown Tackle, Tri Lakes Tackle, Neuville Stone, Shelby Savings Bank, Champion and Mercury.

Third place was won by Brian Sewell and Chip Sewell with their bag of 22.68 lbs. They stated that they were on the move a lot fishing their traps and jigs.

John Turner who normally fishes with his brother Eric said that he really missed his net man today. “I missed one at the boat that may have made a big difference. He was fishing drains with a spinner bait. John won the Big Bass honors with his 9.04 lb beauty. This fish earned him $1,000, the Costa Del Mar $200 bonus plus the WFN bonus.
