Cagle & Shaw win over $25,000 at Bass Champs on Sam Rayburn
By: Patty Lenderman

Every single Bass Champs tournament opens a new opportunity for any team to win nearly $30,000 in cash & prizes. On March 27, 2010 Randall Cagle & James Shaw got most of it winning over $25,000 on Sam Rayburn topping a field of 258 boats.

The day started out just right. The lake was calm, the sky was overcast, the weather was cool but would warm up to the mid 70’s by days end. Around 9:00am, the peace was over as the winds quickly came and built up speed to 25mph sustained with higher gusts. For the rest of the day, anglers had a work out fishing and traveling in the high winds, finding out what their trolling motors, batteries, and equipment was made of for the duration of the day.

As the weigh in began, spectators started betting between themselves what would take 1st place. This time of year we are accustomed to seeing very large sacks close to or over 30 pounds. Everyone also seemed amazed at the tenacity of these anglers, thinking there would be several weary ones that would come in early. None did, they all stuck it out until the end.

The weights continued to climb as each bag was weighed. James Shaw and Randall Cagle brought in the first sack over 20 pounds to take the lead. “Our day started out good! Within the first three or four casts, we had a six pounder in the boat,” Randall recalled. “It was a slow bite. We really struggled until around 1:30, when it started getting better. James caught a 4, 3, and our 7.74 lb kicker.” They had one plan and stuck with it all day. Using a Zara Spook in shallow water around grass and brush, they hit a few points but concentrated mostly back in the pockets. “We tried to stay in protected, calm water. After wrapping up a limit, we were only able to cull one time. We lost quite a few that would have helped.” Turns out they didn’t need the ones that got away, with their final 23.50 lb weight they won 1st place by nearly 3 pounds. Bass Champs presented them with the guaranteed $20,000 check, and they were also fishing from a qualified Skeeter boat for another $5,000. For using Sure Life products in their livewell the received $200. The team finished the day with a grand total of $25,200. “I’d like to thank James, he’s a great partner. We would also both like to thank our wives and family for their support. We’d also like to acknowledge Bass Strike Tackle in Zavalla, R-1 Bass in Beaumont, Bass Champs for putting on great tournaments, and the Dawson family.”

Tommy Dickerson and Chris McCall brought in the only other sack over 20 lbs, at 20.66. “We stuck to shallow water, 6” to 4’ around brush and floating grass,” McCall reports. The team didn’t have any fish in the boat the first hour of fishing. “That was very disappointing. We caught three small ones on a wacky worm, then pitched a ½ oz Santone jig and caught our kicker.” Switching to a white double willow 3/8 oz Santone spinnerbait they wrapped up their limit then culled the rest of the day. “We hit one two hour lull, then moved and tried some new water. After culling two more times, we were done.” The team would like to thank their sponsors: Ranger, Evinrude, American Rodsmiths, Berkley, Santone Lures, Gambler, and Abu Garcia.

3rd place was won by Nathan Stroup and Eric Adams weighing 19.86 lbs. “We were using soft plastics, on a wacky worm pattern. Most of our fish were shallow, around 4’, at grass flats – no brush.” They stayed back in the pockets, and were catching the fish moving in and out of the area. They managed a small 10 lb limit by 10:00, but kept moving, hunting for better bass. “11:00-1:00 was the most productive time of the day for us. We managed to cull our entire initial limit and then some.” The team would like to thank American Rodsmiths, Bass Cat, Mercury, Shimano, Costa and Carrot Stix.

Stan Burgay landed the Big Bass of the tournament weighing 8.28 lbs. That fish won $1,000 and anchored a 4th place win for him and Lance Hughes with a limit weighing 19.18 lbs and an additional $2,000. “It was my first bite!” Stan was using a V & M Chatter bait with a V & M Hula Shad. Flipping bushes in 8’ of water, Stan landed this first bite that kicked off their day. “We only hit two areas and lost several fish today, but caught enough to cull up three times.” The team would like to thank American Rodsmiths and V & M lures.
